
OVERVIEW
The purpose of this Section is for learners in law enforcement environment who demonstrate understanding of crime prevention within a policing environment.
INTRODUCTION
You will learn about the constitutional mandate for democratic policing within a South African context. Understand the regulatory framework for the implementation of crime prevention in a South African context and the concepts related to crime prevention within a law enforcement context. There are also primary functions of law enforcement agencies, the South African Police Service in terms of the Constitution. Formal regulatory framework comprises four important Acts and The Constitution of South Africa; The White Paper on Safety and Security; the National Crime Prevention Strategy and the South African Police Service Act.
The philosophy (viewpoint) of crime prevention in a South African context and the concepts related to crime prevention within a policing and security environment. There are different perceptions, beliefs and viewpoints from society, internationally and nationally media, and even the police themselves of crime
prevention in South Africa. Let us discuss them in broader terms.
The approaches towards crime prevention in relation to safety in society. Society makes up everyone in South Africa who fights for his or her rights and implements measures to prevent crime. The people of South Africa can become involved in community programmes to support local safety and security programmes and address issues. The police have different approaches to fighting crime and preventing it from happening. All approaches towards crime prevention have to be evaluated within a South African context.
